I wanted to get my old VHS home movies onto DVD before the tapes rotted away to nothing, so I purchased this Sylvania recorder. I’ve filled up 25 Verbatim 16x DVD-R’s now, and so far I’m very satisfied with this unit. The only complaint I have is that it’s kind of tricky to get the tracking adjusted satisfactorily. You have to play your VHS tape for a few minutes and work with the two tracking buttons on the front of the machine until you’re sure all the static lines are gone. Then push rewind to go back to the start of the tape without pressing stop (if you do, the tracking will be messed up again). Then pause the tape and insert your DVD-R (DVD+R’s work too, although the instruction manual doesn’t mention them), choose the DVD record speed (the 120-minute SP mode provides good results) and press the DUBBING button. After the recording’s done, you need to use the setup menu and finalize the disc so it can be played on a standard DVD player.

I have owned mine for about a year and a half. I have had no major problems with the unit itself (I did perform the update offered at Philips’ site a while ago).

I got this recorder because it had a hard disk and was touted as easy to use. Wrong!!!. Terrible instruction book. I spent nearly six hours on the phone with customer service just trying cable hookups to get it to respond at all. After that it wouldnt establish its program. It had a crazy requirement that you had to leave your TV off for 24 hours for it to establish a program. It wouldnt work without the program(stupid requirement) I had only one TV so that was a real annoyance.I got so angry and disgusted that I just set it aside. Eventually after the warranty had expired I found it had come out of the box defective so I might as well as set fire to the $400. Save your money dont buy Panasonic
Customer Review: The Panasonic DMR-EZ475V S-U-C-K-S
I bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ475V in May, 2007 and have had a lot of problems with it. It botches up DVD+RWs in so many different ways that they have to be thrown away. It’s operations haven’t been thoroughly tested, thus locking up the machine more often than not. I spent $300 plus sales tax for this…terrible WASTE OF MONEY. Believe me, stay away from this machine and be suspicious of similar Panasonic procucts. Bottom line…the DMR-EZ475V S-U-C-K-S.

Customer Review: Fragile and Temperamental
I purchased this unit (the DR787T) just prior to the 2008 Academy Awards in order to use the TV tuner with my tuner-less TV. The quality was about what I was expecting, not bad but it also wasn’t something that would blow me away. I don’t watch a lot of TV and usually watch movies on my X360 or computer, so the unit didn’t receive a ridiculous amount of use. Despite that, it has now completely failed to read any DVD I throw at it, both burnt and commercial, less than 6 months after purchase. It is as though it simply decided to only be a tuner from now on. From what I have read, this is an issue that affects many owners of the DR787T. Keep this in mind when thinking about purchasing this. I am very tech savvy and took good care of the unit, all the while using it very mildly. It now is borderline useless to me. To spend $100+ and have something fail within 6 months is ridiculous to me. The warranty isn’t that long so after it ends you are simply going to be out more money if you get it fixed for a fee.
