Customer Review: Sony Recorder We are happy with the Sony VHS DVD Recorder Combo. We decided that the Sony gave us the most features that we needed. Customer Review: Avoid SONY DVD recorder I bought this recorder to record programs while I’m not home. Isn’t that why everyone buys them? It won’t let me record cable programs to a dvd. I get a message saying that I am not allowed to record copyrighted material, but it lets me record the same program to the built in VHS recorder, which is NOT in high definition. So I spent all this money on high-def cable and the best SONY tv, and I have to watch grainy video for anything I can’t be home to see at broadcast time. Buy some other brand folks. Now I see on-line that not all brands do this.

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built In Tuner The Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK DVD recorder is capable of receiving both digital and analog broadcasts. Even when digital signals drop out because of interference with direct signal access, which makes the picture either disappear or become filled with block noise, the Digital Tuner still produces a beautiful picture. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you’re ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos. Connect your Panasonic DVD recorder to a flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the recorder. Once the Auto Preset Download is complete, the DVD recorder will keep whichever TV channel you’re watching as its receiving channel. This means you can record the program you’re watching by just pressing the Record button on the VIERA remote. With VIERALink, you don’t have to worry about setting the recorder to the right channel every time you want to record something. Frequently used buttons, such as Power and Open/Close, are located at the top of the main unit (this makes them easier to see when the unit is placed in a rack, where you need to look down when operating it). Very good product with lots of features. I particularly like the ability to watch a DVD-RAM from the beginning while continuing to record (chasing-playback feature). If the product was more intuitively easy to use, I’d have given it 5 stars. Customer Review: Avoid to keep your sanity Unless you have a Ph.D. in gobbleygook–avoid this awful to set up, dreadful to program and impossible to decipher machine. Having had cheap DVDs die five minutes after they were bought–I thought this might be better. VCR AND DVD capabilities–I was a pro with a VCR. No problem, right? Wrong.

If you con program your VCR there will be no problem running the baisc recording functions of this DVR. The 160 GB will get you about 60 hours of recording/storage time on standard resolution. The DVD viewing functions and controls are also good. I have not used the editing and dubbing functions, or tried linking though USB or another external device yet. Customer Review: No DVD-RAM Having gotten tired of lines and other quality problems with VCR tapes, I did a lot of research on digital tuner DVD recorders to replace the remaining VCR machines I own. I had already bought a Panasonic DVD recorder which was superb but had no digital tuner. So based on reviews at Amazon and elsewhere and comparable priced, I purchased the Philips 3576H. No thanks, it is going back. First, it does not accept DVD-RAM discs. I have developed a preference for the large reuse capability of those discs and other advantages peculiar to DVD-RAMs. Second, the quality of the picture transmitted through the Philips machine was terrible - ghosty and lacking clear edge lines. No amount of fooling with settings or changing of cables or rearranging the Philips to different positions in the chain of machines (other DVDR and VCR) made any difference. Save your money and wait until Xmas when I am sure Panasonic will come out with an acceptable digital tuner-based DVD recorder. In the meanwhile, Panasonic has a “no tuner” DVD recorder which must be dictated by price but won’t do for me.
